Sampo was built to break ice, not to carry tourists. The 75-metre vessel left Wärtsilä's Helsinki yard in 1960, displaced roughly 3,500 tonnes, and spent twenty-seven winters forcing convoys through the Gulf of Bothnia before the Finnish state decommissioned it in 1987.
The town of Kemi bought the hull rather than let it be scrapped. From 1988 the ship carried passengers instead of escorting cargo, and the Icebreaker Arktis Cruise from Rovaniemi grew out of that conversion — a working state icebreaker handed to civilians without being softened for them.
Its significance is geographic before it is nautical.
