Sampo was built to work, not to carry passengers. Launched in 1961 at Wärtsilä's Helsinki yard, the 75-metre state icebreaker spent three decades clearing shipping lanes along the Finnish coast so that ore, timber and paper could keep moving through winter. Retirement came in 1987.
Rather than scrap the hull, the city of Kemi bought it and converted the vessel into a working tourist ship — the only retired state icebreaker in the world that still sails with visitors aboard.
The ship's numbers explain its second career. Two propellers at the stern, two at the bow, 3,200 tonnes of displacement and a spoon-shaped forefoot designed to ride up onto the ice sheet and crush it downward with the ship's own weight. That method has not changed since 1961. The Gulf of Bothnia is the reason Finland needed a fleet like this at all. Finnish shipyards became the world's dominant builders of icebreakers as a direct consequence, and Sampo is a surviving example of that engineering lineage, alongside the snow-and-ice architecture of the nearby SnowCastle on the same Kemi waterfront.
Below decks the conversion is honest rather than cosmetic. The engine room, the wheelhouse, the officers' mess and the original crew cabins remain largely as they were, with brass fittings, riveted bulkheads and the diesel-electric machinery that still drives the ship. Guides trace the vessel's Cold War-era service history while the hull grinds forward at walking pace.
